Mum's the word

Gosh, I've been a bit quiet lately haven't I? Been quite a while since my last post, and that was rather devoid of actual crafting activity. You could be forgiven for thinking that there wasn't any creative work going on at Chateau Clementine. Which would be, I like to think, incorrect.

So, to set the record straight:

There has been some sewing happening.
Lavender and soft green
I finished off the box bag Jess ordered, and finally finished off this lavender and soft green one for my shop. Available here!

There has been some knitting happening.
bunny for Aurelio
Yeah, just another Bunny I'm afraid. For another one of my reproductive friends- this time for a little boy called Aurelio (a beautiful name I think- his dad is Italian and they spend some time there each year), who was born the day after our wedding.

The bunny was started some time ago but I stalled due to the emerging realisation that I was going to run out of yarn. I know convention is to knit faster when faced with such realisations- but I go the opposite way. Frustration and annoyance set in, and I adopt a "go-slow" work practice. In the end, it was a S'n'B meet this week that prompted me to pull it back out of the bag, to rummage for all the yarn scraps I could find, and get on with the job. I'm sure I missed a row out of the head somehow (the stitch count was out, and he looks slightly stunted), and I had to knit both ears simultaneously, and a few rows short, to make the most of the knotted yarn scraps. I had just enough ends left to sew him together. He will be remaining tail-less.

And there has been some reproduction happening.

With so many friends around us having babies, Scott and I finally gave in to peer group pressure and will be producing an offspring of our own late June, 2007. Actually, it wasn't really peer group pressure- it was something we've been planning and discussing for quite a while now, but we do feel like we're contributing to the baby boom that Melbourne and crafty-blog-land are experiencing at the moment. It's very exciting that things have gone according to plan, and all is well, so long as I'm in bed by 9.30pm* and remember to eat at frequent intervals. Now that we're over the 12 week danger zone, and all tests have shown good results, Christmas (and birthday) celebrations have been (very soberly for me, I might point out) mingling with celebrating our pregnancy with friends and family.

yarn cakes

Of course I've started scheming about knitwear for a winter baby... I'm thinking hats, kimono wrap tops, the odd sweater, some socks (I'm told that this sock pattern will actually stay on!) and maybe even mittens (it gets cold in Melbourne!). We're not going to find out the sex beforehand, so there's a need for a unisex approach. I've been gazing at the yarn-cakes I wound last night for a good few hours now, trying to figure out what would work with which pattern, whether I have enough yarn, and whether it's something I really would dress my child in. After all, I haven't had one before- and it's hard to imagine that 6 months from now, I will...

*This bed time, coupled with train journey nausea, have cut severely into my craft time over the last 3 months... hopefully, now that I'm into the second trimester, my craft/life balance will improve, and I will actually manage to knit some of the things I'd like to knit this year!

inspiration from all corners

I've been escaping the sweltering heat and smoke filled haze that have descended on Melbourne this weekend but lingering indoors, catching up on some sewing and blog reading (although the thought of casting on a tension swatch for Sunrise Circle is tempting, the heat has been sufficient to scare me off from handling yarn).

Some highlights of my net surfing that you may enjoy too:

- Blair did a great post a while back about the value of handmade creativity in the home, which has reminded me of a few good things.

- Melissa's fabric boxes- as you know I am a lover of the boxy fabric crafted item, and I could definitely make use of some of these, custom sized to appropriate nooks and corners.

- New Knitty is up, with some gorgeous socks and the sweetest little soft toy (Hmmm, maybe I need a break from bunnies..)

- Maybe a pattern in English, that doesn't suck (... gotta love a blunt slogan) would inspire me to try some crochet amigugumi? (Via Sooz)

And I'm sure there's been more but I can't remember where...

maybe a purple patch then

There has been crafting going on here, in the background, perhaps somewhat erratically...

There are some little needle books in progress- lavenders and soft greens, and maybe a splash of orange.
piling up

I started these after finishing off a couple of pouches for Meg, as gifts for a couple of her close friends and helping hands at her wedding. I was in such a rush to finish them off and set them on their way I completely forgot to photograph them. Somehow Meg found the presence of mind, and enough time, in the midst of hectic preparations for her wedding to take some shots. More pics at Flickr.
for Meg and co

And also underway (and now increasingly overdue... see- told you it was erratic crafting) is a box bag for Jess- she shares my love of this gorgeous orange floral fabric with bark-cloth texture. I think after this bag I might have to hoard the remainder (I bought the shop out!) for a project for myself.
progress for jess

And fresh in the stash is this yarn from a swap with Blossom. We've been planning a yarn swap for a little while now. She sent me a bag of Karabella Soft Tweed in this delicious deep grey- it's destined to become a Sunrise Circle Jacket (sorry, no link- the Interweave pattern link doesn't seem to be working for me right now). I'm looking forward to getting to work on this project- something new, and interesting- I'm totally intrigued by the shaping of this pattern- I do like Kate's patterns. The yarn is deliciously soft- it's hard to believe it's only merino wool, not some complex cashmere/wool/microfibre mix!
yarn from blossom

As you can see, Blossom included a bonus treat too- a skein of Malabrigo in a delicious leafy green, with oh, so subtle variations from the kettle dyeing process. Again- so soft! I'm thinking maybe wristwarmers after seeing Kris' latest FO, but it's hard to contemplate actually making wristwarmers with the hot, dry summer weather we've been having. Maybe that's a project to put on the list for 2007?

Another project on next years list is Shobhana's Bejeweled Scarf- She's being a generous gal and is donating a significant part of the (cheap) price to the Mongolia Project at F.I.R.E.
Get your copy (and more info) here.

(Hmmm I wonder if I can find some time to update my projects list on the sidebar? Maybe a New Year's Blog Spring Clean is called for..)
